Sports Anchor Tweets Job Goodbye

Another cautionary tale in the world of Social Media, kids.  And this one should give us all some food for thought.  Canadian sports broadcaster Damian Goddard has lost his job at Sportsnet thanks to an ill-considered tweet.  Sources suggest Goddard tweeted his support of a hockey agent’s stand against gay marriage. Management at Rogers decided to fire him, though officials stress the tweet was not the only factor in their decision.  Is there more to this than meets the eye?  Time will tell.  Until then, some social media lessons to be learned.  Ready?  Here goes… (More…)Let’s start with common sense.  It’s become a valuable commodity in these high tech days of Twitter and Facebook.  More of us need to USE some of it.  If you’re one of the millions of people around the world embracing Twitter as a means of communication, you need to think long and hard before you tweet.
Repeat.  You need to think long and hard before you tweet.   “Will this injure my reputation or that of my employer?” is a good question to start with.
You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again.  If you wouldn’t feel comfortable seeing your comments on a billboard in the centre of town, don’t hit the send button on that tweet.  Then, take a moment to consider whether your employer might be uncomfortable with your comments.  If the answer is “Well, maybe…”, then for goodness sake, keep your tweet to yourself.

As a friend of mine likes to say, “The trouble with common sense is that it ain’t so common.”  Now THAT’s a message I’d like see on Twitter. ;-)
