Social Media & Summer Camp!

Some great comments flying out there in the blogosphere this month about a hot topic for parents.  Should you send your kids to summer camp with their iPhone or their iPod or their Blackberry in their hip pocket?  No big surprise here…  Lots of strong reaction.  What do YOU think? (More…)

Isn’t the point of going to summer camp to get away from civilization for a week or two?  Isn’t the point to be unavailable to the outside world?  Isnt’ the point to temporarily toss all your high tech toys and listen to the birds instead of to the ring tone on your cell phone?

But parents say they want access to their children… to know that they are safe.  And kids say they want to text their friends while they’re up in the great white north, and post pictures of their canoe trips on Facebook.

Interesting dilemma.  I say you need to turn your phones and pods and pads over to mom and dad BEFORE you leave for camp.  Maybe at the end of your week or two away, you can sit down at the camp computer and write an old fashioned EMAIL home to tell your story.  That’s right… EMAIL.  It’s what we all used BEFORE the advent of Facebook and Twitter.  Dark ages?  Don’t be so sure.

Baby Boomers like us will remember the old comedy routine “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah”… about a little kid who goes to Camp Grenada for the first time and writes a letter home.  Maybe we need to go back to the good old days… back to a place in time where telling a story was more important than texting your friends about what you just had for lunch.

Just a hunch.  Then again, I could be wrong.  ;-)
