Facebook and the Queen!

November 24, 2010  |  Facebook

It’s official, everyone.  Unbelievable, yes, but still official.  Earlier this month, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II is now on Facebook.  As soon as I heard the news, I knew that Social Media had truly given the planet a push in a stunning new direction. Why?  Let’s put the kettle on, open a bag of crisps and have a word, shall we?

It seems almost surreal to think that an 80-something monarch would consent to allow her image and info to grace the pages of Facebook.  Heck… my Mom doesn’t even trust telephone banking, let alone a social networking site that boasts more than half a billion users.

But if you really think about it, it all makes perfect sense.  Facebook is about reaching out and connecting with people. And in these tough economic times, the Queen understands that reaching out and reassuring her subjects is more important than ever.

The experts who advise the Queen are smart enough to know that Social Media is the new language of a new generation.  And now that Prince William has announced his engagement to Kate Middleton, a future King and Queen are poised to step out onto the world stage.  My bet is that they’ll take that step with an iPhone 4 in their hands, snapping wedding pix of themselves at the altar of Westminster Abbey, and posting them on Facebook before the confetti has time to hit the ground.

Now wouldn’t THAT be a royal treat?
