Weinergate… Wow!

June 8, 2011  |  Twitter

Hard to believe, my friends, but yes, they’re calling it “Weinergate”.  In the latest sordid example of politicans and Social Media gone wild,  married US Congressman Anthony Weiner has admitted to sending lewd pictures of himself on Twitter to a series of women… women he swears he has neither met nor had an intimate relationship with.  Oh boy.  How many times does it bear repeating?  If you wouldn’t want to see it on a billboard high above the biggest intersection in your hometown, you shouldn’t – repeat shouldn’t – tweet it.  And that goes DOUBLE for politicians!!! Sports Anchor Tweets Job Goodbye

May 13, 2011  |  Twitter
Another cautionary tale in the world of Social Media, kids.  And this one should give us all some food for thought.  Canadian sports broadcaster Damian Goddard has lost his job at Sportsnet thanks to an ill-considered tweet.  Sources suggest Goddard tweeted his support of a hockey agent’s stand against gay marriage. Management at Rogers decided to fire him, though officials stress the tweet was not the only factor in their decision.  Is there more to this than meets the eye?  Time will tell.  Until then, some social media lessons to be learned.  Ready?  Here goes… (More…)

Social Media and the Toronto Blackout

July 6, 2010  |  Twitter

Summertime… and the living is easy… That’s what the old song says, anyway.  But nothing was easy about summertime in Toronto yesterday.  In fact, it was downright HARD.  Around 4:45 pm,  elevators throughout the financial district jerked to a stop, lights went out, computer screens went dark, and people’s eyes shot open in disbelief:  BLACKOUT.  But this Blackout was different from any of the others we’ve seen before.  Why?   Social Media was centre stage. Music and the Power of Social Media

June 18, 2010  |  Twitter

His name is Justin Bieber.  You know who I’m talking about… the 16 year old singing sensation from Stratford, Ontario, Canada.  The kid is a pop phenomenon who’s taken the MTV crowd by storm over the past year or so.  He’s also a pretty clever guy who knows exactly how to use Social Media to fuel his career.   One tweet from Justin Bieber to his frantic fans is enough to inspire hysteria.  Now, a group of high school students from Justin’s hometown are hoping it might be enough to inspire fame and fortune for themselves… (More…)

“$#*! My Dad Says” and the Power of Twitter

May 20, 2010  |  Twitter

If you’ve been a little disconnected from the Social Media world, chances are you haven’t heard of the latest Twitter phenomenon coming to a TV show near you this fall.  It’s called “$#*! My Dad Says”.  The new show, starring the great William Shatner, is based on a Twitter feed begun by struggling writer Justin Halpern, who explains, “I’m 29.  I live with my 74 year old dad.  He is awesome.  I just write down $#*! that he says.”  And that $#*! is laugh-out-loud funny.  Did I mention?  Halpern’s Twitter feed has more than 1.3 million followers.  Yowsa.  So how did he make the jump from Twitter to Television?  Let me tell you… (More…)

Twitter Goes Commercial

April 13, 2010  |  Twitter

If you’re a Baby Boomer, chances are you’re still trying to wrap your brain around what “Twitter” is.  Why are Tweets necessary in life?  What purpose do they serve?  Why should we care?  Millions of people around the world are sending Tweets into cyberspace on a regular basis.  And now comes word they’re going to be “tweeted” to something we all knew was coming eventually:  Advertising.  Tweet mother of God! Number 1 Reason to Care About Twitter

April 5, 2010  |  Twitter

Let me guess.  Chances are at one time or another, you’ve probably  muttered under your breath, ‘Twitter Schmitter… What’s the big deal?” Something like the record execs back in the 1960’s who muttered “Beatles Schmeatles… What’s the big deal?”  The comparison is an important one.  Eventually, of course, the Beatles proved all the naysayers wrong, becoming one of the biggest sensations ever to hit planet earth.  The lads from Liverpool became the British Invasion.  Well, think of Twitter as as the “Techno Invasion”… (more)
