Are you LinkedIn???

May 6, 2010  |  Social Media for Business

Got your funny hat on?  Got your streamers?  Check.  Double check.  Okay, all together now… “Happy Birthday to You,  Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday dear LinkedIn, Happy Birthday to You!”  Wait… Never heard of it???  Which rock have you been living under for the past 7 years, my friend?  We have to bring you up to speed.  Come with me and prepare to be amazed… (More…)

For those who don’t know, LinkedIn is a professional networking site that launched 7 years ago this week.  According to the social media website “Mashable”, that makes it older than Facebook (2004), YouTube (2005), and Twitter (2006).  Hard to believe anything developed before the advent of Facebook is actually still alive and kicking.  LinkedIn now boasts more than 50 million users.  That’s more people than the entire population of Canada.  Yowsa.

So why should you care?  That’s simple.  LinkedIn is the easiest possible way for you to create a professional presence online.  You may want to change careers, look for a new job, or simply attract new clients for your existing business.   LinkedIn allows you to do that and more for free.  In fact, some employers will actually ask you for your LinkedIn URL on a job application.  Don’t have one?  You need to catch up with the times.

Here’s the thing.  And I hate to be the bearer of bad news.  You have to do the work.  Yes, you heard me.  The work.  You have to go to the site, enter your resume information, profile picture, and then edit the whole thing down to size until it “sings”.  Exhausted just thinking about it?  Courage, Camille.  It could be the best investment you ever make in yourself and your future. ;-)

  1. Al – There’s absolutely no doubt that LinkedIn WILL be a huge help to you! When you get on the site, you’ll be amazed at the people you KNOW who are already there — looking for a job or not looking for a job. They have the vision to understand that whatever your career situation is, LinkedIn is a great way to put yourself “out there”. See you in cyberspace, Al ;-)

  2. Gotta be honest, this is all news to me, and I considered myself reasonably well informed. I am going to check into this site and see what it is all about. I am looking for an ‘Encore Career’ and this may be of assistance. Wish me luck!

  3. Sean… LinkedIn is where it’s at, Boomer Baby. Don’t think of it as another “social networking” site. Think of it as a PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING SITE where people looking to connect for job/career reasons find each other. There’s a section for “Recommendations” on your profile page so that you can ask trusted colleagues and friends to say great things about you to the outside world. What’s not to like about that?

Why not do an experiment, my friend… Try checking out the site and searching names you know. I guarantee that you’ll see people on LinkedIn from every chapter of your working life. Their profiles will look sharp and slick, and you’ll wonder what you’ve been waiting for. If ever you had to look for another job, the beauty of it is that you’re already out there… your professional calling card is floating in the ether, waiting for employers to check it out. Let us know what you think!

  4. Luddites? I don’t see any Luddites in here! Just a bunch of concerned Baby Boomers trying to keep up with the break-neck speed of the universe. Happy to help, Marianna. Thanks for checking in on a regular basis the way you do. You make my day ;-)

  5. I’ve got a LinkedIn account but I don’t use it. Probably because I use Facebook so much and don’t see the need for another “Social Networking” site. I know I’m missing the boat from a work point of view so I’ll have to update my profile and start checking it out more often. Thanks for the reminder.

  6. You give such great information about what everyone should know about. You really do know a lot about all manner of media so thanks for bringing us Luddites up to speed.
