Weinergate… Wow!

June 8, 2011  |  Twitter

Hard to believe, my friends, but yes, they’re calling it “Weinergate”.  In the latest sordid example of politicans and Social Media gone wild,  married US Congressman Anthony Weiner has admitted to sending lewd pictures of himself on Twitter to a series of women… women he swears he has neither met nor had an intimate relationship with.  Oh boy.  How many times does it bear repeating?  If you wouldn’t want to see it on a billboard high above the biggest intersection in your hometown, you shouldn’t – repeat shouldn’t – tweet it.  And that goes DOUBLE for politicians!!! Sports Anchor Tweets Job Goodbye

May 13, 2011  |  Twitter
Another cautionary tale in the world of Social Media, kids.  And this one should give us all some food for thought.  Canadian sports broadcaster Damian Goddard has lost his job at Sportsnet thanks to an ill-considered tweet.  Sources suggest Goddard tweeted his support of a hockey agent’s stand against gay marriage. Management at Rogers decided to fire him, though officials stress the tweet was not the only factor in their decision.  Is there more to this than meets the eye?  Time will tell.  Until then, some social media lessons to be learned.  Ready?  Here goes… (More…)

April 25, 2011  |  SM Trends, Social Media for Business

Drive a car?  No question you need insurance, right?  Well, looks like you might need insurance to drive the Social Media highway, too.  Sources say so many people are posting inappropriate comments on Twitter and Facebook these days, a new business has sprung up to protect us all from lawsuits… “Cyber Insurance”.  Right now, U.S. corporations are the major clients.  But individual insurance could be on its way sooner than you think.  Slip into the driver’s seat, and I’ll tell you why.  (More…)

Egyptian Names Daughter “Facebook”

February 20, 2011  |  Facebook

Another fascinating (and this time somewhat funny) chapter is now unfolding in the Egyptian story this weekend.  Get ready for it.  An Egyptian man has reportedly named his newborn daughter “Facebook” in honour of the role that social media played in orchestrating the mammoth protests forcing Hosni Mubarak out of office.  You heard right.  According to the Egyptian newspaper “Al-Ahram” her full name is “Facebook Jamal Ibrahim”. Twitter Revolutionizes Revolutions!

February 12, 2011  |  Current Events

I watched history unfold on television last night.  The kind of history that makes you take mental note of where you were when it happened.  As in, “Where were you when the Berlin wall came down?”, or “Where were you when Elvis died?”  It was that big.  After years of what many of us had no idea was such brutal tyranny, the people of Egypt finally broke free.  As the TV cameras rolled, the protesters in Cairo erupted into a tidal wave of jubilation.  Hosni Mubarak had stepped down as President.  What really got me thinking, though, is the fact that this is truly the first revolution in history that was fuelled and followed on Social Media.  (More…)

Facebook and the Queen!

November 24, 2010  |  Facebook

It’s official, everyone.  Unbelievable, yes, but still official.  Earlier this month, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II is now on Facebook.  As soon as I heard the news, I knew that Social Media had truly given the planet a push in a stunning new direction. Why?  Let’s put the kettle on, open a bag of crisps and have a word, shall we?

I have to admit, folks… I haven’t felt this excited about a new toy since I was 5 and Santa brought me a “Chatty Cathy” doll with a string you pulled out of her back to make her talk.  You guessed it.  Last Friday, I was first in line at my local Telus store for the latest in state-of-the-art high tech:  The iPhone 4.  And I promise you, I haven’t been disappointed.  New to the world of smart phones?  Let’s hit the “App” button for “iPhone 4 tutorials” and take her for a ride… (More…)
